Eyeliner is the Little Black Dress of makeup. An essential for every beauty wardrobe.
But there are many types of LBDs. Some are more flattering than others. Some are a bit fashion-forward. And some are simply a little scary. For example, I love a long flowing 1970s variety; my better half, however, would probably prefer me in some kind of short, bandage-like number, the thought of which makes my knees – which rarely see the light of day – tremble a little.
But back to eyeliner… Every Fashion Week, makeup artists experiment with different ways to apply it. Sometimes it’s smudged. Sometimes winged. Sometimes graphic. The emerging eyeliner look right now, however, is a chic wedge of colour on the upper lids (with practically zip going on down below).
I’m going to start with the extreme version of the look, over at Michael Kors:
It’s apparently meant to look like the colour is floating above the eye. Which is kind of cool but not so wearable, in my beauty book anyway. It does, however, make me want to not only whack on some liner (albeit along the lashline), but choose a bright, poppy blue shade. LBD, after all, could also stand for little blue dress, right? And a colourful eyeliner is a super-easy way to both liven up the face and brighten your eyes.
Sticking with the blue theme was makeup artist Tom Pecheux over at Altuzarra:
He used M.A.C’s Technakohl in Auto-de-Blue, $35, M.A.C, a super-stylish navy, and drew a neat wedge – sans wing – along the upper lashline. Isn’t it beyond chic?
And because it takes three to make a trend, here’s the makeup look from Holmes & Yang – as in, Katie Holmes’ new fashion range:
The makeup came courtesy of Bobbi Brown, Katie’s new bestie – seeing as she is the new BB face and all. And to me, this subtle, sleek line is quintessential Bobbi. I think that’s because I’m so obsessed with her Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner, $45, Bobbi Brown. It’s eyeliner for dummies, when paired with a great liner brush (Bobbi sells one for $45, although I actually prefer an angled variety, such as Eco Tools’ one, which is $7.99 and available at Priceline). And the other great thing about this gel liner is that it lasts and lasts and lasts, seeing as you only need to use a teeny amount each time. So on a cost-per-use basis, it’s probably almost free. Oh, and one other fabulous thing about Bobbi’s gel liner: it comes in a wide range of colours, and all of them wearable, from black to violet to emerald to chocolate… So you can pop on almost any colour Little Dress (of the makeup type) you could possibly want.
What do you think, Primpers – do you dig this eyeliner trend?
Or do you prefer to wear your makeup LBD in another way?
